Are you ready for a year of fun and engaging events that showcase the many different ways we can share stories verbally?

Word Fest Toowoomba is back for another year, and this time we’ve got an even more exciting program of events planned for you.

Thu March 2 – 4.30  – 6pm Reading Allowed workshop at Mosaic Hues (behind Rowes Furniture) Tickets available from Rachael at Mosaic Hues.

Fri 24 March – Fashion Parade –  “Fashions of the Turfed” Zero Waste recycled outfits.  Fund Raiser for Hope Horizons…  Cat walk space and sponsorship from Grand Central….12 noon to 1 pm.

 Sat 25 March – cooking demonstration at Harmony Day – Picnic Point – 11-2pm – from our Taste of Toowoomba recipe book

APRIL

April and May will have Friday evening  FIRESIDE CHATS with Luca Greenleaf at Afterlife Cafe and Wares in Bellevue Street, Mort Estate; and Community Radio interviews with Females Over 50 and Councillor Megan O’Hara Sullivan’ s BIG LITTLE SMALL TALK and Pat from 107.2 radio.

May brings The Perfect Pitch – singing and song lyrics across the community choirs and songsters.

Thurs 25 May

LIVE AND LOCAL SESSION (3.00-4.00pm) between online sessions of the Sydney Writers’ Festival at Empire Theatre.  Word Fest Toowoomba in conversation with Aileen Bradley and Ruth Atkinson.  Free entry.

FIRST WEEK IN JUNE

Thu 1 June

LITERARY LUNCH and noted author Nikki Mottram (12.00noon – 2.00pm) – Toowoomba Masonic Hall – Join us to hear about the locally flavoured novel Crows Nest.  Tickets are $40 which includes a welcome drink and a two course lunch, raffle, literary activities and book signings. Tickets available at Literary Lunch | Mosaic Hues. 

Fri 2 June

Evening – POETRY SLAM – (7:00 – 9:00 pm), Muay Thai, 88 Water Street – a fun night with something different for sure.  Fund-raiser for the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation.  A Poetry Slam is a fun, structured competition where poets share their original poems during a 3 minute timeframe in a competition decided by the live audience and a panel of judges.

The format of this spoken word genre is as follows:

  • It is original poetry drawing an emotional response from your audience
  • It fits within the 3 minute time limit
  • It is simple and relates to the time and place and perhaps age of the particular audience
  • It vibrates with passion and rhythm and uses a range of senses, imagery and pace
  • No props, costumes or music are allowed

Poetry Slams are highly entertaining and the program is lively.  First prize – $350, runner up – $100.

ASK THE ARTIST (1:30-3:00 pm), Toowoomba Gallery, 3 railway Street, Upper level – Exhibition of various artists opening at 1:30pm, with panel of Artists in Conversation from 2:00-3:00pm with Anna Battle.  Free entry.

Sat 3 June

Evening STORYTELLING UNDER THE STARS UniSQ Gumbi Gumbi Gardens with UniSQ Indigenous Elder in residence Uncle Wayne Fossey; Indigenous Artisan Market; the Star/ Sky Lab; and Ask the Artists in the Library.

Sun 4th June

WORKSHOPS AND AUTHOR TALKS (10:00am – 2:00pm)  Toowoomba Library Community Rooms – full program can be downloaded HERE and tickets range from $12-$20 and can be purchased at Word Fest Toowoomba: Author Expo | Mosaic Hues

Tues 6th June

QLD DAY BREAKFAST (6:30-8:30am) Muller Brothers, Bell Street Mall.  Guest Speakers Jai Gordon, Jamie-Lee Wagner, Rebecca Vonhoff.  Launch of What Now Sisters by Carmen Darwin.  Tickets $46pp, with $5 from every ticket sold going to Blush Cancer Care Inc.  Purchase tickets at Queensland Day Breakfast | Mosaic Hues
