No, it’s not slamming a poetry book down on the desk at high school. It is not a frustration reflex.
A Poetry Slam is a fun, structured competition where poets share their original poems during a 3 minute timeframe in a competition decided by the live audience and a panel of judges.
The format of this spoken word genre is as follows:-
. It is original poetry drawing an emotional response from your audience
. It fits within the 3 minute time limit
. It is simple and relates to the time and place and perhaps age of the particular audience
. It vibrates with passion and rhythm and uses a range of senses, imagery and pace
. No props, costumes or music are allowed
Poetry Slams are highly entertaining and the program is lively. An international following sees competitions across the globe, with You Tube examples and plenty of tips to encourage those dipping their toes, or voices in this case, into the water.
